Quick answerThere is no single age. The AAHA life stage guidelines define a senior dog as one in the last 25% of its estimated lifespan, and a senior cat as one older than 10 years. A giant-breed dog can be senior earlier than a small one.

The guideline definitions
The 2023 AAHA Senior Care Guidelines state that because aging varies by species and breed, “there is no specific age for senior status.” They cite the 2019 AAHA Canine Life Stage Guidelines (senior is “the last 25% of estimated lifespan through end of life”) and the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines (cats greater than 10 years).
What that means in practice
Large and giant dogs usually have shorter lifespans, so “the last quarter” starts sooner. Ask your vet to estimate for your dog.
For cats, 10 is the guideline line, but many vets start senior screening conversations earlier if something looks off.
“Senior” is a care stage, not a diagnosis. Many senior pets feel good for years with the right monitoring.
A baseline is useful. Write down your pet’s weight, usual appetite, usual sleep, and how they get up and climb stairs today. Later changes will be easier to see.
